The story of SoundWear begins in 1989. That year, Yu Shihu, a graduate student with a Master’s degree in Metal Materials and Heat Treatment from Central South University, headed south to Xiamen, fueled by the aspirations of the Reform and Opening-up era. He joined GN ReSound (China)—one of the first international hearing product companies established by foreign investment in China.

Over the next 11 years, he helped GN ReSound build one of the world's leading professional hearing aid production bases in Xiamen, which consequently became China's largest manufacturing hub for these devices. During this process, he became acutely aware of the industry's pain points: high technological barriers and exorbitant prices, with units costing between 10,000 to 30,000 RMB, resulting in a penetration rate of less than 5% among China's hearing-impaired population.

This realization solidified his mission: hearing aids should not be luxury items affordable only to a few, but accessible healthcare products for the general public.

In 2004, Yu Shihu left the foreign enterprise to found NewSound Technology in the Xiamen Torch High-tech Zone. He took a solemn vow: To create China's own hearing aids, ensuring more fellow citizens can afford and benefit from them.
